		<description>
	BLUE MEMORIES
2025

The exhibition Blue Memories is the result of a
3-month residency in Porsgrunn, Norway. In 2024, I had the luxury of being able
to spend a period as a the Porcelain Grant holder in Porsgrund's Porcelain
Factory, completely without restrictions. While trying to renew the craft, I
also wanted to test the material's limits of what is possible to do in a non plastic
industrial porcelain clay, and see how large and fragile I can work without
collapsing.
Next to the workshop was an antique dealer with rows of boxes marked “ 10 kr for everything!”, filled with objects. Starting from these pieces, those which the antique dealer had labeled as trinkets and wortless, large organic porcelain flowers emerged; decorations from cups and plates which have been allowed ro swell in the room into bodily forms, inspired by Georgie O’Keeffe. Flirting, chained Wally dogs and dead porcelain swans in dialouge with the men’s great Renaissance paintings.
The meeting between textile and ceramics is irrational and full of resistance. I embroider on porcelain with cotton thread in an attempt to recontextualize the crafts. During my time in Porsgrunn, I started waving with porcelain based in abstracted crochet patterns, the image frame becomes a freedom within a tight framework. By combining textile traditions with decorative porcelain with my contemporary ceramics, I want to make an attempt to highlight all the precious and impressive craft objects that are often left behind within the walls of the domestic space, continuing to challenge the hierarchies in the field and make traditional female craft visable.

		<description>
STRANGE STRINGS
2024

Strange Strings is the name of the art exhibition, in which Swedish and Berlin creativity meet once again - as already manifested in the interior concept of our showroom . At first glance, Caroline Harrius and Olaf Bastigkeit may seem to have little in common: While she focuses exclusively on one material (ceramics) and a few objects (tiles, plates, mirrors and vases, and again vases), he seems at home everywhere. Sculpture and watercolour drawing, video and light installations, sculptures made of paper, metal, wood - it seems as if there are no materials or techniques that would not appeal to Bastigkeit.
It is only at second glance that one realizes what connects the two artists. On the one hand, there is the depiction of nature, especially floral motifs, which is an essential part of both artists' current work. While Harrius crochets floral motifs onto ceramic vases in her series "Embroidered Objects", thus immortalizing the motif of the flower, Bastigkeit captures the growth and decay of various cut flowers in his short film series "Descendingascending" and shows them as part of chaotic systems in several graphic watercolours in the series "Space is the place".
Olaf Bastigkeit's films are cinematic collages combined with sound. They bear names such as Amarylis, Gladiolis or Lilies and show corresponding bouquets, sometimes in long shot, sometimes very close up. Flowers grow and open, are magnificent and strong, wither and fall apart. A

process that we are all familiar with, that we have all observed many times before - and which can nevertheless unfold great power. Olaf Bastigkeit's films show how differently each flower appears in its growth and decay. Depending on their individual characteristics, very different compositions are created that raise questions: What is beauty, what is transience? What is it about this process that touches us, and in which phase of life might we ourselves be? What is waste, what is growth, what is resurrection?
Harrius, who lives in Stockholm, also raises questions with her "Embroidered Objects". Her inconspicuous, traditional household objects such as crocheted curtains, embroidered cushions, floral wallpaper or embroidered vases evoke nostalgia: what do we value today as great art and what do we reject as tasteless frills? To what extent is the history of arts and crafts characterized by gender hierarchies? And how do these possibly continue to affect the arts and crafts of today?
Incidentally, the title "Strange Strings" is another humorous reference to an analogy between the exhibitors - and Bolon. After all, strings are an integral part of Caroline Harrius' work, they run through Olaf Bastigkeit's graphic works, and they form the basis of all Bolon flooring

Current Nostalgia (The Red Exhibition)2024

In the exhibition Current Nostalgia, Caroline has tried to understand how we value different craft traditions depending on which group has historically been associated with it. She examines unassuming objects that have remained within the domestic space, filled with knowledge and nostalgia; crocheted curtains, embroidered pillows, floral wallpaper.

Crafts
with strong associations to female making, traditions which I have just
dismissed as something that simply belongs in a home, just mere decoration,
objects she never viewed as important pieces of art

.
Based on old, found objects, Caroline develops new methods to recontextualize craft traditions that she feels have historically had a lower status and discuss the gender hierarchies behind this.

By
combining different crafts with each other, she wants to create a new context,
where precious and impressive craft objects which are often left within the
home can be re-evaluated in a contemporary society.

Current Nostalgia was presented as a solo show at Blås och Knåda in the spring of 2024.

Caroline Harrius (b. 1993 Linköping) is a ceramicist based in Stockholm, with a bachelor degree in medium and material based art from Oslo’s National Academy of the Arts, and a master degree in craft from Konstfack. In her artistic practice, Harrius often works with questions regarding gender hierarchies in craft history, and how these structures are affecting her own work in a contemporary society. Her master project “The Repulsive Flower” (2020), is an investigation of gender norms in ceramic history, questioning what traditions we have chosen to live on. What do we value as great art today, and what do we reject as tasteless knick knack? Can we relate this to historical gender roles in craft? Harrius works from her studio in the old porcelain factory in Gustavsberg, G-studion.

Making Something From Nothing / Houseproud
2021

Making Something From Nothing /
Houseproud is a curatorial project by the ceramicists Joanna Günther
and Caroline Harrius. The project is based on a text from 1978 by Lucy Lippard; Making Something From Nothing. They share a common interest in the text, which despite its age
is still comparable with today's society and status symbols in the home. Eleven artisans with an artistic practice relevent to the chosen essay, allfrom different fields with widely differing skills, were invited to
take part of the text and produce a work. The result is an exhibition where a group is presenting their own examiniation of the same issues, and narratives born from the same text.
The show took place during Sthlm Craft Week at the

The home makers sense of care and touch focuses on
sewing, cooking, interior decoration as often through
conditioning as through necessity, providing a certain
bond between middle-class and working-class housewives
and career women. (I am talking about the making of the
home, not just the keeping of it; “good housekeeping” is not
a prerogative for the creativity in the home. It might even be
the opposite, since the “houseproud” woman is often prouder
of her house, her container, than she is of herself.)

Even these days women still tend to be brought up with an
exaggerated sense of detail and a need to be “busy”, often
engendered by isolation within a particular space, and by the
emphasis on cleaning and service. A visually sensitive woman
who spends day after day in the same rooms develops a
compulsion to change, adorn, expand them, an impetus
encourageby the ”hobby” books.

The ”overdecoration” of the home and fondness for bric-a-brac
often attributed to female fussiness or plain Bad Taste can just
can just as well be attributed to creative restlessness. Since
most homemade hobby objects are geared toward home
improvement, they inspire less fear in their makers of being
“selfish” or “self-indulgent,” there is no confusion about
pretentions to Art, and the woman is freed to make anything
she can imagine. (At the same time it is true that the imagination is often
stimulated by exposure to other such work, just as ”real”
artists are similarly dependent on the art world and the works
of their colleagues.)
Making “conversation pieces” like deer
antler salad tongs or a Madonna in an abalone shell grotto,
or a mailbox from an old breadbox, or vice versa, can be
prelude to breaking with the “functional” excuse and the
making of wholly “useless” objects.
